A 28-year-old motorcyclist has been left in critical condition, fighting for his life, his bike was struck by a vehicle driver attempting to take a left-hand turn. The crash occurred on Cobb Parkway South at Polytechnic Lane in Marietta at approximately noon on Wednesday, March 29th.
According to police, an 18-year-old driver who was operating a Toyota Camry attempted to take a left turn onto Cobb Parkway when she drove into the victim’s bike which was heading southbound. The impact of the crash caused the victim to be ejected from his bike, leaving him critically injured.
Left-Hand Turn Motorcycle Accidents
Vehicle drivers taking left-hand turns in front of motorcycles are one of the most common – and deadly – types of motorcycle accidents that occur. Many of these accidents occur because the vehicle driver fails to wait until large vehicles are cleared from the intersections so they fail to see the motorcycle or they fail to check their own vehicle blind spots, which can hinder the visual of a motorcycle.
Horrific Injuries
There is nothing to protect the motorcyclist when a vehicle slams into them and/or when they are thrown into the air by the force of the vehicle. This is why the rate of injury is so high compared to passenger vehicle accident victims. This difference is evident in the data:
- There are more than 2,000 motorcyclists out of every 100,000 registered owners who have suffered injuries in motorcycle accidents.
- There are 700 vehicle owners out of every 100,000 registered owners who have suffered injuries in car accidents.
There are more than 4,000 people killed in motorcycle accidents each year in the United States. Almost 200 of those victims are killed right here in Georgia. Tragically, these numbers increase every year.
For those motorcycle accident victims who do survive, their injuries are so catastrophic that they are often left with permanent disabilities that impact their quality of life. The medical costs for treatment of these injuries can be astronomical and – in many cases – ongoing for as long as the victim lives. In fact, it is estimated that the medical cost of motorcycle injuries is more than double the medical costs for the treatment of injuries from car accidents.
An Athens, GA personal injury lawyer can help motorcyle accident victims recover financial compensation for medical expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, emotional anguish, disfigurement, scarring, permanent disability, loss of life enjoyment, and more.
